Mockingbird Conference

by Alice Devall

I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to experience the Mockingbird Conference in New York City last ring.  Through the years I've heard Fr. Drew and a few members of St. Alban's refer to this conference on various occasions.  It was delight to finally experience this conference first-hand.  The Mockingbird Conference provides a wonderful opportunity to be inspired by quirky spiritual intellects.   Despite having experienced some significant life frustrations prior to the conference, I came home feeling rejuvenated and grateful for the opportunity for fellowship with a delightful group of individuals from St. Alban's Chapel.   I greatly appreciated the opportunity for the scholarship funds that helped make attending the Mockingbird Conference possible.

Mockingbird is a ministry that "seeks to connect the Christian faith with the realities of everyday life in fresh an down-to-earth ways." This is done primarily through publications, conferences, and online resources (see www.mbird.com). The name “Mockingbird” refers to the curious characteristic of the bird itself: to repeat the message it has heard, over and over again. Behind the project and the community the rises out of it lies the conviction that none of us ever move beyond our need to hear the basic good news of God’s Grace. Mockingbird was founded in New York City in 2007 and has since moved to Christ Episcopal Church in Charlottesville, VA. Fr. Drew serves on the Mockingbird Board of Directors. Mockingbird will hold its 10th Anniversary Conference in New York City on April 27 - 29, 2017. A group from St. Alban's Chapel will attend. Speak with Fr. Drew for more details and make plans to join us!

Mockingbird Conference Reflections . . .

I must say that my approach to the Mockingbird Conference might best be characterized as “Ok, let’s see what ya’ got.”  Charlene, my wife, told me a little about her experience at Mockingbird a year ago and I’ve been kind of intrigued by that ever since.  However, in my history, meetings and conferences of a religious nature have seemed (to me, at least) the place filled with the “Bible thumpers” who always have a verse or two of scripture right handy to make their every point, and since it’s Biblical, God must have said it so that makes their position valid.  Since I can’t do that, I steer clear of those kind of events and people when I can.

Well, I can tell you that Mockingbird is definitely NOT what I suspected.  The speakers chosen to address the attendees are among the most accomplished people in their respective fields who just happen to have found Jesus along the way.  Or, maybe Jesus found them, I don’t exactly know.  They told stories about their experiences finding Jesus that sound a lot like the things I have encountered.  I have come away from the conference with confidence that “my” Jesus is just a valid as anyone else’s and He and I seem to be on the right track.

Thank you, everyone of St. Albans, for making it possible for me to make the trip to New York to attend this most worthwhile “highpoint” in my personal spiritual growth.  I hope to become a regular.

Mockingbird is a weekend to soothe the soul and the mind. Combining spirituality and intellect, the annual Mockingbird conference gives attendees an opportunity to hear a myriad of talented speakers from across the country. This conference struck a chord with me in particular because it presented a very authentic conversation about real Christianity and how we can live it in our modern word (without the conference being pushy or self righteous). Personally, I can not wait to learn from spirituals, academics, and other attendees like myself when I attend Mockingbird in the future!
